The 'Trucks, 1/4 ton' (jeep) and associated trailers quickly became an integral part of Australia's military equipment inventory following their introduction into service in mid-1942. Small, nimble and almost unstoppable, the jeep was used by a wide variety of Army units, the RAAF and, in the post-war period, the RAN. Often towing one of several models of 8-cwt trailers, the jeeps were also modified extensively to fulfill specific tasks. These included ambulances, mobile wireless stations, machine shops, generators, and even a forward-area mobile showering system.

The jeep remained the basic light tactical truck well into the post-Second World War period. It was used in Japan with the occupation force, and by Australian forces during the Korean War. The last of more than 1 5,000 jeeps supplied to Australia between 1942 and 1945 were finally retired in the early 1960s, after some 20 years of valuable service.

This book encapsulates those years of service in 356 images, many not previously published. Detailed text and extensive captions explain every aspect of the jeep's use by Australian military forces. The book also reproduces 80 pages of Australian military technical publications about jeeps and jeep trailers, bringing all of this valuable information into one reference source.
