When we discussed producing the second Halifax book in the series, most of the Wingleader Team wanted to feature the Hercules powered versions as we felt that was what most people would want next. However, our author Pete Allam disagreed. He pointed out that the late Merlin engined series aircraft were crucial in the Halifax’s development, in terms of all the airframe refinements that grew into the Mk.III, and to leave this until later would make little sense. We bowed to Pete’s superior judgement on the subject of course and set him off once again to wade through our several hundred Halifax photos.
The results in this book thoroughly justify Pete’s advice. This is an exceptional book that once again untangles the Marks, Series, ‘A’s and Specials into one coherent guide to all the late Merlin engine types. Pete has dug deeply into the various types of ‘Tollerton Nose’, the different radiators and propellers, the modified turrets and much more. In short, this isn’t just a reference guide for the average modeller, this is a reference guide for the model companies themselves, such is the depth of research found in these pages.
