Quand le 26 novembre 1941 les six porte-avions de la Kidō Butai quittent secrètement la rade d’Hito-Kappu dans les îles Kouriles et mettent le cap sur Pearl Harbor ils embarquent environ 380 appareils : bombardiers en piqué, bombardiers – torpilleurs et chasseurs. Tous dans leur catégorie représentent ce qui se fait alors de mieux en termes d’appareils de combat monomoteurs. Les chasseurs sont du type Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen ou Zéro, les premiers sont entrés en service depuis à peine plus d’un an. Alors que va débuter la Guerre du Pacifique s’ouvre pour le Zéro une période certes courte (à peine quelques mois) mais, au cours de laquelle il va se forger une légende dont peu d’avions peuvent se targuer d’avoir bénéficié dans l’histoire de l’aéronautique.

C’est à la description de cet appareil quasi mythique que va s’attacher cet ouvrage qui constitue un premier opus ; un second sera consacré à sa riche carrière opérationnelle.

When, on November 26, 1941, the six aircraft carriers of the Kidō Butai secretly left the harbor of Hito-Kappu (in the Kuril Islands) and set course for Pearl Harbor, they embarked about 380 aircraft: dive bombers, torpedo bombers and fighters. All of them in their category represent the best of what was then being done in terms of single-engine combat aircraft. The fighters were of the Mitsubishi A6M2 Rei-Sen or Zero type, the first of which had been in service for just over a year. As the Pacific War was about to begin, the Zero began a period that was admittedly short (barely a few months), but during which it would forge a legend that few aircraft in the history of aeronautics can claim to have enjoyed. It is to the description of this quasi-mythical aircraft that this book will focus, which constitutes a first opus; a second will be devoted to its rich operational career.
