The final design had been developed by Commander Motoki Kondo and was designated the A.64. As we can see from the preliminary drafts presented above, the battleship concept was similar to the assumptions that had been accepted for the battlecruiser “Hiei”, but proposed a greater number of main guns. When compared to her predecessor, the hull of “Fusō” was shortened by 9,450 mm, more main guns were installed as well as new license-built turbines and the armour was strengthened on the main parts of the hull. In the latter case steel of varied mechanical properties was needed: the estimations of NS, HT and mS quantities for the A.64 were respectively: 1,508 tons, 908 tons and 62 tons, i.e. a total of 2,478 tons at the scheduled 11,530 tons needed for hull and equipment.
