Camera ON 36: Sd.Kfz. 11 – leichter Zugkraftwagen 3t by Alan Ranger is a richly illustrated study of one of the most important German half-tracked artillery tractors of the Second World War.

Rather than attempting to provide another exhaustive technical history of the Sd.Kfz. 11, the book concentrates on its photographic record. Most of the images come from the author’s collection and were taken by ordinary German soldiers before and during the war. Unlike familiar official and propaganda photographs, these personal snapshots show the vehicles as they were actually used in everyday service – on the road, across difficult terrain, towing artillery, carrying ammunition, supporting engineer units and performing numerous other duties.

The photographs cover a wide range of Sd.Kfz. 11 versions and modifications, including artillery and personnel bodies, pioneer vehicles, Nebelwerfer support vehicles and specialised Sd.Kfz. 11/1, 11/2, 11/3, 11/4 and 11/5 variants, as well as late-war anti-aircraft versions. The vehicles are shown in service in a variety of theatres, including France, Belgium, the Balkans, the Eastern Front, North Africa and Italy.

Detailed captions highlight differences in construction, equipment, unit markings, camouflage, weapons being towed and the conditions in which the vehicles operated. Comparative material at the end of the book also places the Sd.Kfz. 11 alongside other German half-tracked prime movers.
