This is the first of a two volume magnum opus by Stephen to cover the vastly complex study of the French artillery. To do so he has gone back to the beginning, demonstrating the phases of development that ultimately led to the artillery of the Seven Years War. The second volume will take the story into the Napoleonic period. All types of artillery are examined, hence also the coverage of naval ordnance. Along with the careful scholarship this is be far the most handsomely illustrated book to have been published on the subject, with stunning photographs & diagrams of artillery pieces and their carriages. It also includes a study of artillery uniforms to compliment the hardware.
